JSI File Transfer

You may send and receive data files to us by three methods.

  1. As attachments in an email. Attachments are limited to 2Mb in size. This method is appropriate if you have a small number of files that do not exceed the maximum attachment size. You may send files directly to the Production Coordinator at "firstname"@jsidata.ca, or to datafiles@jsidata.ca.
  2. Using JSI's FTP Server at ftp.jsidata.ca. For this you will need a FTP Client program. FTP allows transfer of larger files and multiple files can be transferred at once. You should specify binary transfers. Change to the "incoming" directory to upload files to us, or the "outgoing" directory to download/pick-up files from us. In addition, the SFTP protocol is also supported on port 222 giving the benefit of encrypted transmission. On Windows you can use WinSCP or FileZilla, on Linux you can use FileZilla or gFTP, or the sftp or scp command-line programs.
  3. Using JSI's File Transfer Secure (via TLS) Website. There is a 50Mb limit on the size of the file.

To use the FTP Server or the File Transfer website you will need to login using an account name and password. If you do not have an account please contact us. File names should contain only letters, digits, the "-" (dash) or "_" (underscore) characters. The FTP Server will reject files with spaces, the Transfer website will replace spaces with underscores. All files uploaded are automatically scanned for viruses.

You should compress the datafiles you send to us to reduce both the size of the file and the transfer time. For this you may use most common "zip" programs, such as WinZip and PkZip under Windows, or Linux/Unix utilities like gzip, bzip2 or 7z. Note however that we cannot currently decompress files in WinZip's zipx format.

We also strongly recommend that you encrypt all datafiles you send to us. Methods you can use are:

  • AES Encryption using Winzip or 7z with a password. You will need to communicate this password to us by phone or fax.
  • Public key encryption using PGP or GPG. The public key to use is here. It's fingerprint is 9E4D B1EE E698 95A8 240F 6C2D 4361 4C0D 596B 8274.
  • However, "Old style" Winzip encryption is NOT recommended as it is not as secure as Public Key or AES encryption.
